·        “TransCentury Leadership Training Program,” for Guangzhou Government, a project of the China Institute and the Center for Partnerships for Educational Reform, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001.

·        “Dalian Leadership Training Program,” for Dalian Government, a project of the China Institute in collaboration with the Universal Professional Exchange Association, 2001.

·        International Professional Development Academy for education and business administrators, in collaboration with educational institutions and business enterprises in Guangzhou, Nanjing, Shanghai and Beijing, from 1997 to 2001.

·        Special Training Programs for Health Care Administrators from Guangzhou and Yantai, fall and spring, 2000.

·        Joint MBA program between CSUN’s College of Business Administration and Nanjing University of Science and Technology.  Under discussion and development.

COMMUNITY SERVICES:

The China Institute continued its cooperation with the community groups in providing services to the general public. We have received PROCLAMATIONS from State Assembly Speaker Robert Hertzberg, State Senator Richard Alacon and City Councilmen Hal Benson & Alex Padilla., recognizing our involvement with the local community groups.  The following are a few examples of our service to the local community:

·        Co-sponsored the "A Night with Martial Arts" demonstration on October 28,2000, at CSUN Performing Arts Center with the Chinese Heritage Foundation.  Funds were raised to help build the San Fernando Valley Chinese Cultural Center.

·        Co-sponsored the “Asian-American Heritage Night,” on May 19, 2001, at the CSUN Campus Theater, with the San Fernando Valley Chinese Cultural Association.  The evening celebrated different aspects of Asian-American culture and tradition and was well-attended by local politicians, community members, and our faculty and students.

·        Facilitated the visits to Chinese schools in Beijing and Shanghai for the Education Delegation from Vaughn Next Century Learning Center (a charter school in Pacoima) led by Dr. Yvonne Chan and consisting of more than 70 school teachers and staff, spring, 2001. 

Faculty Development Grant Awards for 2001-02:

·        Professor Yifei Sun (Geography Department) Received a $1000 Faculty Development Grant from the CSUN China Institute to examine the Chinese national innovation systems imbedded in government, education, corporate R & D, and interactions among these sectors. National innovations systems found in China will be compared with those in developed and other developing countries.

·        Louis Rubino (Health Science Department) received a $1000 Faculty Development Grant from the CSUN China Institute to carry out collaborative studies with Donghai Wei (Guangzhou Medical College) on strategies hospitals use to function in a competitive marketplace. Issues of patient protection, access to care, integration of clinical services, wellness and preventive measures, community outreach and use of alternative care will be compared between China and the U.S.

Chinese Government Scholarships (2001-2002) for CSUN Students:

The China Institute selected and recommended two CSUN students to the Chinese Government Scholarship Council via the Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles for the 2001-2002 Academic Year Awards.  The competition was sharp among Southern Californian institutions of higher learning.  With the support of CSUN university administration and the guidance from the Chinese Consulate General in L.A., both of our two candidates received the prestigious awards—full Chinese government scholarships covering tuition and living expenses for study in China in the 2001-2002 academic year. 

·        The first award winner, James Lo, is a graduate student in the Department of Radio/TV/Film and he plans to study as a visiting student in the Beijing Film Academy, following the footsteps of CSUN’s first scholarship student there, Angus McNellis, who is successfully completing his studies and film projects in Beijing.

·        The second scholarship winner is Oliver May, who is a senior student from CSUN’s Department of Music.  He will study Chinese language and culture, as well as traditional and modern Chinese music, at our sister university, Nanjing Normal University.  Oliver visited China two years ago with CSUN’s Jazz Ensemble and he has been fascinated with China ever since.  He has been learning Chinese language on campus and has served as an English tutor for the visiting Chinese scholars at CSUN. 

CSUN Delegations/Scholars’ Visits to China:

1.      Professor Chao Chen visited China to engage in collaborative research, summer,and fall, 2000; spring, 2001.

2.      Professor Judith Marlane was invited to speak at the Shanghai International Television Festival in October, 2000.  As part of their academic semenar, she lectured about the documentary in America as well as the way we teach our students here at CSUN.  She  also filmed two Chinese newswomen for the documentary she was doing on Newswomen of the World.

3.      Professor Paul Chow visited our sister university, Beijing Institute of Technology, and participated in their anniversary celebration activities on behalf of the China Institute, October, 2000.

4.      Professor Owen Smith, Department of Theatre, went to Shanghai as an exchange professor to the Shanghai Theatre Academy, spring, 2001.

5.      Angela Lew visited Shanghai, Nanjing, and Yunan for collaborative research projects, joint degree programs, and preparation of Chinese art exhibition, spring, 2001.  She also offered valuable advice to the Chinese counterparts regarding the modernization of university libraries.

6.      Professor Mingfang Li visited Zhejiang University of Science and Technology for lectures and collaborative research, summer, 2000.

7.      Professor Justine Su visited Shanghai Teachers University and Nanjing Normal University for lectures and collaborative research, summer, 2001.

8.      Professor Lou Rubino and Ellen McFadden visited Guangzhou Public Health Bureau and lectures to health professionals in Guangzhou, summer, 2000.

9.      Professor Miriam Cotler visited Guangzhou and Lectured to health professionals there, summer, 2001.

10.  Professor Yifei Sun visited China to conduct comparative research, summer, 2001.
