1999-2000 Faculty Development Grants

  The China Institute at CSUN requests applications from faculty for awardsto support the development of collaborative training and research programs with institutions in China. One competition will be held for the entireacademic year. This competition will support proposals for the Summer 2000, Fall 2000, or Spring 2001 terms.Faculty are encouraged to use these awards as a vehicle to travel toinstitutions in China in order to initiate or carry out collaborativeprojects or as a means of securing grants from external funding to broaden the scope of their collaborative projects. Projects that involve studentassistants and visiting scholars from China are especially welcomed. Applicants should specifically identify the manner in which students/scholars will be involved.

There will be two grant awards of $1,000 each. Applicants are encouraged to seek general information and guidelines related to this competition from the China Institute (ext. 3939 or e-mail: zsu@csun.edu).

1999-2000 China Scholarship Council Award 

The China Institute at CSUN requests applications from both undergraduate and graduate students in all fields of study for awards from the China Scholarship Council to support a full-year of study in any selected subject matter area in a selected institution of higher learning in China. One competition will be held for the entireacademic year. This competition will support applications for study in China for the 2000-2001 academic year.The scholarship will cover all tuition and living expenses for the awardees.  

 In addition, the scholarship recipient/s will receive an additional stipend of $1000 (or $500 for each person if there are two recipients) provided through the “Lau Mi” Award established in the memory of Mildred Z. Mininberg who dedicated her life to improving global understanding among people of diverse backgrounds.

Students are encouraged to use these awards as a vehicle to travel to and study in institutions in China in order to further their understanding of the Chinese culture and tradition, as well as their knowledge in a specialized area.   Currently, one of CSUN’s graduate students is studying full time under such a scholarship in the Department of Directing at the Beijing Film Academy.

2000-2001 Chinese Government Short-Term Studies Scholarship Program


This is a scholarship for foreign teachers teaching Chinese.  The scholarship aims at sponsoring the Chinese language teachers from foreign countries to go to China to take the short-term courses so as to improve their techniques of teaching Chinese language, facilitating the exchange and cooperation in the field of Chinese language teaching of
the scholars from the world and enhancing the exchange and friendship between the Chinese people and people from all over the world.  

The scholarship covers a period of 4-week language studies in China and includes all costs for tuition, medical care, lodging, and living allowance (about 2,000 Chinese yuan in total).  The applicant for this scholarship must be a non-Chinese nationality, be healthy and under the age of 55.  The applicant should be engaged in teaching Chinese for three consecutive years and hold the teaching post at the present.  The
applicant should have at least a bachelor's degree.

2000-2001 Chinese Culture Research Fellowship


This is a fullscholarship aiming at sponsoring foreign experts engaged in the study of Chinese culture to further their understanding of modern China, to deepen their research of the long and profound Chinese culture and traditions so as to enhance the friendship between the Chinese people and people from all over the world.  The scholarship will cover
up to five months of study/research in China and include full tuition, medical care, lodging, living allowance, reference materials, and a research tour inside China.  

The applicant can be a researcher in the fields oe language, literature, history, philosophy, education,
economics, ancient architecture, history of art and traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture.  The research should be conducted in Chinese language.  The applicant must be a non-Chinese nationality and be healthy and under the age of 55.  He/she must hold professor or associate professor titles, or must have obtained doctor's degree. Master degree holders must have been engaged in the Chinese culture research for three consecutive years after obtaining master's degree. The applicant should work in a profession engaging or mainly engaging in Chinese culture research.
