CSUN education professor Jeanne Adams was a member of the Association of California School Administrators Delegation to China in September, 1999.The visit was part of the “People to People” ambassador program initiated by President Dwight Eisenhower to foster greater understanding between countries.  The delegation visited educational ministries and teaching colleges to observe teacher training and staff development.   The delegation also joined thousands of Chinese families in their week of spectacular festivities and celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China.  (Jeanne Adams)

  • Workshop on Comparative Education

In September, 1999, at the invitation of our sister university, Nanjing Normal University, Prof. Justine Su conducted a workshop on comparative education for a group of educational administrators from different provinces in China as well as from several major African countries as a part of the Second Advanced Workshop on Theory and Development Strategy of Rural Education at the International Research and Training Center for Rural Education sponsored by UNESCO.  During her short visit in Nanjing, Professor Su also attended research seminars and summary meetings for her comparative study of teacher education in the U.S. and China. • "Working” in Shanghai

st-in-sha.jpg (56352 bytes)In the summer of 1999 some twenty-one CSUN students and a small faculty contingent traveled to Shanghai, China, to perform at the prestigious Shanghai Centre Theatre. The invitation was extended by President Rong of the Shanghai Theatre Academy, which housed and hosted the Northridge Theatre Department guests while there.  The students reprised their spring CSUN production of "WORKING", a musical based on interviews with American workers conducted by Chicago's famed columnist Studs Turkel. In addition to the evening performances in Shanghai, the Northridge students and faculty also toured the countryside by day and participated in joint theatre workshops with their ShanghaiTheatre Academy counterparts. Plans are now underway for the visit of a production of the Shanghai Theatre Academy to CSUN sometime during the next academic year.(William Taylor)

The CSUN Jazz A Band toured Beigjing and Shanghai this past fall. We were invited to perform at an international jazz festival in Shanghai as part of the 50th anniversary celebration. We had a very successful trip and learned a great deal about China. The best part of the trip and the most fulfilling concert was at the Shanghai Teachers’ University (our sister University) in Shanghai. After our performance, we were treated to student musicians performing traditional Chinese music.....what a treat!

The Northridge band was especially grateful for the English students that donated so much of their time to be with us the entire week.  The Chinese students exemplified true international spirit by showing our students Shanghai, helping us communicate, and most importantly, accepting us into their culture with open arms.  I would have to say that our connection with the Teachers Institute was the highlight of our entire tour!(Matt Harris, Director, CSUN Jazz Band)
