Part I
Getting Ready for Studying at CSUN

Eligibility, Requirements and Application Procedures

Before you plan to study as an International Visiting Scholar at CSUN, you must know the requirements and application procedures. You may check out the following articles provided by the Office of Graduate Studies, Research and International Programs (GRIP) at CSUN to see if you are eligible for this program.

International Visiting Scholar Request Policies and Procedures

1. Background
These policies and procedures pertain to the selection and appointment of International Visiting Scholars and do not concern regular university application procedures for international students nor departmental hiring practices for regular or part-time faculty even though hired from abroad.

2. Definition
An International Visiting Scholar is an individual from abroad who is invited to affiliate with an academic or administrative unit for a specified period of time for the purposes of research or study. They may sit in classes, teach, or provide other services, as long as they possess adequate English language skills.

3. Policy Statement
Inquiries about hosting International Visiting Scholars may originate from an individual faculty member or administrator, academic or administrative units, or from foreign individuals or institutions. The university has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with many foreign institutions.

Request for approval of invitations for International Visiting Scholars shall be obtained in advance according to the following routing procedures. The sponsoring academic or administrative unit (or units when activities are cross-departmental, school or administrative boundaries) shall obtain written approval from the relevant Dean(s) or
responsible administrators. This approval and other correspondence shall be forwarded to the Associate Vice President for Graduate Studies, Research and International Programs with the complete form (attached).

4. Procedures
If the campus obligation in hosting the visiting scholar requires no additional allocation of funds other than those which might be available within the university unit, approval will be automatically recommended by the Associate Vice President, Office of Graduate Studies, Research and International Programs (GRIP) to the Vice President for Academic Affairs or other appropriate Vice President (Student Affairs or Administration). If further review is requested, the Associate Vice President for Graduate Studies, Research and International Programs will consult with university unit(s) and then make recommendations. Once approved, a letter of invitation will be generated by the GRIP office and signed by the Provost or designee. Proof of health insurance for the period of stay must be provided before scholar's CSUN privileges are granted.

5. Record Keeping
To ensure accurate records are maintained, the sponsoring coordinator(s) are requested to confirm the International Visiting Scholar's actual arrival with the GRIP office.
