Part III
Housing and Utilities

Where and What to Look for

Before you arrive in Northridge, one of the most important decisions you will make is where to live. Having a comfortable housing situation helps you to succeed in your studies and enjoy living in the Northridge community.

There are several different styles of housing available to you: CSUN housing, off-campus apartments living and housing in American homes. All of these are described in detail in the section below. You may decide what is best for you by considering your budget, the number of roommates you wish to have, and what sort of transportation you will use to go to campus.

CSUN Housing

CSUN Housing is a university-owned dormitory complex. It is open to regular university students/scholars attending CSUN. It consists of two-bedroom apartment suites with full bathroom, living room, kitchen, closet space and balcony. The complex also has outdoor swimming pools, athletic and laundry facilities and a dining facility. I recommend that you stay in CSUN Housing during your first session at CSUN. Later, as you become
more familiar with the community, you can explore other housing options.

Services Available at CSUN Housing

Parking
In order to park in the residential parking lots, including the parking structure between the Satellite Student Union and Lupin Hall, you must purchase and display a Resident Parking Decal. The Resident Parking Decal is valid on campus and Residential lots. Student decals are not valid in Residential parking lots. Vehicles without proper decals displayed will be cited. Special permits are required for Staff (red) and Medical Permit (blue) spaces. To purchase a Resident Parking Decal, pick up a resident parking application during Check-In or at the Residential Life Office and submit it, along with the appropriate payment, to Cash Services.

Personal Telephone Service
Four telephone jacks are provided in each suite, two in each bedroom. A phone center will be available at Check-In to assist residents in ordering a telephone service. Billing and payment for telephone service is a matter of contractual agreement between the residents and the telephone company. The Maintenance staff provides maintenance on phone wiring and phone jacks in the suites.

If you experience difficulties with your telephone, submit a "Residence Hall Service Request" at the Residential Life Office, detailing your phone number and jack letter you were assigned by the phone company. Do not contract with Pacific Bell for phone wiring installation or repairs. They will charge you for this service. These charges will not be reimbursed by Student Housing.

Laundry Facilities
For your convenience, coin-operated washers and dryers are provided in each complex. Currently, the price for each load of washing is $.75, and each load of drying $.50 Laundry rooms can be found on the first floor of each building in The Park. Malfunctions should be reported to the laundry company as indicated on the machines.
